Changing hearts and minds
We often hear from autistic people that the world wasn’t made for us. The world was made to include and except all neurotypes.
However, the masses have a whole personality of their own, and that is for many to look after number one. This is why we have so much selfishness and greed amongst us. The economy rules over peoples needs, and we must be extroverted puppets on a string that can be manipulated otherwise we don’t fit in.
Society decided to target neurotypical people as they are the majority and can easily be exploited and manipulated into thinking society has their best interests at heart. To survive in this world autistic people have felt the need to mask for their own safety and survival. We have been made to feel if we do not conform, we have deficits thus disposable.
Saying the world wasn’t made for us may feel true but it doesn’t change or solve anything to keep repeating this, because we are victim to behaviours of others who do not embrace inclusiveness or acceptance of our differences.
Of course, the world doesn’t revolve around autistic people, because there are many people with needs that are not being meant. This is largely due to the attitude towards disability, ableism, and stigma. The attitudes of politicians and world leaders must change as they are a large part of the problem. Society has tried to create a one size fits all. Those that can’t or won’t play along are cast aside as disposable by our leaders for not contributing to society in the ways they want.
We may be thinking neurotypicals are getting all the attention, but they are being exploited and manipulated into thinking their best interests are being met. We have all been screwed by societies dictations of what it means to live a meaningful life. Compassion is all that matters and until the masses embrace our shared humanity, we are a long way of changing hearts and minds in a big enough way.
